In January of 2007, a ballot measure committee was organized and was named Alaskans Together. It was organized to fight against an anti-gay advisory vote promoted by opponents of civil equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) people in Alaska. This group of Alaskans who intended to strip State employees of same-sex partner benefits found themselves fighting a surprisingly close election that inspired a group of local LGBTQ activists from across the state to continue to organize and create a statewide LGBTQ educational and advocacy organization. This statewide LGBTQ organization that has been engaged in local, state, and federal policy discussions and educational initiatives to further LGBTQ rights in Alaska and across the country since 2007.

Alaskans Together for Equality Inc. was formed to organize and perform educational programming and grassroots organizing and advocacy. It is organized as a non-partisan 501(4) nonprofit whose mission is to advance civil equality for all Alaskans through grassroots organizing and advocacy, with a primary focus on LGBTQ Alaskans. It is a membership organization with the only requirement being supportive of LGBTQ equality and an annual membership fee. Members have been encouraged to organize meetings, events, and activities in their respective communities.

In addition, charitable sister organizations include Alaskans Together Foundation, Inc. and Identity, Inc. Both are organized as a 501(c)3 education nonprofits serving the needs of Alaska’s diverse LGBTQ+ community.
